The Allman Brothers dared to break all the rules

The legend of the Allman Brothers Band began in 1969. Duane Allman had met some great musicians and sparks began to fly. But they didn’t have a singer. Duane called his brother Gregg to come up from Florida and the Allman Brothers Band ignited. The confluence of so many musical influences created a sound that has never been duplicated. Dicky Betts brought the country stylings and Duane Allman brought the soul from his sessions with Wilson Pickett and Aretha Franklin from his days at Muscle Shoals. Jaimoe brought his jazz chops and Butch Trucks brought his straight ahead rock drumming style. And, of course, Gregg Allman brought the blues. Duane Allman also pioneered the use of blues slide guitar as an alternative to the typical guitar styles of the day and his slide techniques have been the benchmark of that guitar style ever since. At a time when rock was still young and somewhat rudimentary, The Allman Brothers dared to break all the rules with odd time signatures, modal soloing ala John Coltrane and an unequaled energy provided by two outstanding drummers. The final roster that was to have an indelible mark on Southern Rock and Roll history was in place and consisted of Gregg Allman, Duane Allman, Dicky Betts, Butch Trucks, Berry Oakley and Jaimoe (Jai Johanny Johanson)
